Candlelight and Wine Art Talk with Marc Chabot at Flanders

Marc Chabot is an engaging speaker who has researched and
presented on Natalie’s adventurous life and powerful art on many occasions. He
will show slides which trace the evolution of Natalie’s style as she portrayed
the people, landscapes, and animals of the exotic lands she traveled to as well
as her hometown of Woodbury. While Flanders
owns many of her works, images of privately held works not seen for many years
are currently coming to light and will be presented.

An American woman modernist painter, Natalie studied at the Art
Students League in New York City
with Robert Henri, leader of the Ash Can School, and with Max Weber, who in the
first decade of the 20th Century embraced and then shared the innovations of
cubism and abstraction with his American students. Natalie traveled throughout
Europe and the Caribbean in search of subjects
from which to draw inspiration. Eventually she turned her attention away from
art and to her goal of building a prosperous, fully-working farm as she founded
a successful turkey farm on her parents’ property and later raised
prize-winning sheep.

Ms. Van Vleck evolved the idea of developing a nature center on
her property and of preserving her farm’s traditions to create Flanders Nature Center
in 1963. Today, 50 years later, Flanders has
preserved more than 2,000 acres of land, and focuses on the environment through
stewardship and education.
