In Middlebury, the Haunted Door Walk at Shepardson Community Center, 1172 Whittemore Rd., and the festivities at the firehouse, have been cancelled.

In Woodbury, Trunk or Treat will begin at Mitchell Elementary School, 14 School St., at 5 p.m. People may attend and decorate the trunks of cars and fill them with candy for trick-or-treaters.

This is a spooky tale, one of darkened streets and trees that creaked and snapped in an eerie wind.

Electrified lines and felled trees made for nearly impassable roads and the flickering flame of candles galore cast shadows on the wall.

Children huddled around parents and asked in hushed voices: "Will Halloween be cancelled?"

"Not cancelled," parents replied. "Just different."

Middlebury First Selectman Tom Gormley is urging residents to stay off the streets Halloween night.

"Do not put the kids on the street," he said. "We cannot control all the downed wires. Please do not have the kids go around trick-or-treating."

Gormley recommended parents bring children to Shepardson Community Center, 1172 Whittemore Rd., Middlebury. He said a Halloween walk-through typically takes place and then festivities continue at the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department, 65 Tucker Hill Rd., Middlebury.

Gormley said he will check with Shepardson and the MVFD on Halloween morning. He said the town is 100 percent without power but the Middlebury Police Department, the Fire Department, the Town Hall and the Middlebury Public Library have generators.

Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief Frank Morgan answered the phone at the Emergency Services Building, 25 Quassuk Rd., Woodbury, and said families can go there as an alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating. Candy will be handed out to the families who attend.
