State and local authorities have taken to the Bridle Trail in search of a Middlebury man who is believed to be suicidal.

Police from Middlebury and Naugatuck are working together with authorities from the Connecticut State Police and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection in the search. The man's identity has not been released.

His family has told Middlebury Police that they believe he is depressed and possibly suicidal, according to a release from Richard Wildman, Middlebury's Acting Police Chief.

Police made contact with the family after locating his unoccupied vehicle on Wooster Road in Middlebury — a location they responded to after receiving a report of a man acting irrationally around 2 p.m. today, June 23.

"Police than began tracking with the Middlebury Police K-9, however with the 90-plus degree weather the dog wore out quickly. Naugatuck Police dispatched their dog and that dog also wore out," the release states. "CT State Police were called and responded with a Emergency Services blood hound, which is geared for direct scent searching. CT DEEP was also called in due to the State Bridle Path is the area police are focusing on."

Police are also using an all-terrain vehicle.

"Police want to find him and make sure he is okay," Wildman stated.
