Civil Rights Movement in the South

My son, 21, a Hofstra U student, says he doesn't believe there is anyone in the Southbury/Woodbury area where we live who was directly involved in the civil rights movement in the South back in the day...I want to prove him wrong, and need help doing it.  Any reader know of anyone who was a civil rights activist during the heyday of the movement?
