Region 14 Board of Ed Discusses Potential Budget Reductions

Dropping freshmen boys' and girls' basketball and eliminating the director of curriculum position were discussed by the board.

  After Bethlehem and Woodbury voters rejected the Region 14 2012-13 budget at the Tuesday, May 8, referendum, the Board of Education met on Monday, May 14, to discuss what happens next. Members did not vote on a new bottom line, as the full board was not present to provide input. Region 14 Board of Education Chairman Chuck Cosgriff said the goal is to schedule a special board meeting for later this week. The budget for 2012-13 failed, 1,203 to 836 districtwide, at the May 8 referendum. The rejected budget, at $31,205,513, featured a 3.17-percent increase or $959,484 over the 2011-12 budget of $30,246,029. As a teacher, the idea of a curriculum coordinator is ridiculous. We follow the Ct Common core standards which is the curriculum. Their are also new national standards which CT has adapted too. I cant believed that they would cut 35,000 for texts books (and theirs are really outdated and beat up) which would have a larger impact on more students than one more admin job for a 150,000 dollars which…   more ›

Connecticut Slips in Science Proficiency Ranking

35 percent of Connecticut eighth grade students reached proficiency in the subject in 2011 — the same percentage that reached proficiency in 2009 — however since then numerous other states have beefed-up their science programs.

  As Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy prepares to sign the state's new education reform bill into law, a report from The National Center for Education Statistics shows that the state has dropped in the rankings for science proficiency. According to the report (see attached PDF), 35 percent of Connecticut eight grade students reached proficiency in the subject in 2011 — the same percentage that reached proficiency in 2009 — however since then numerous other states have beefed-up their science programs. As a result, seven states pushed ahead of Connecticut in the national ranking, according to the report. Pomperaug High Earns Ranking as a Top School in Connecticut

Pomperaug, a top tier program statewide, is nationally recognized, according to U.S. News and World Report.

  A recent study conducted by the U.S. News and World Report ranks Southbury’s Pomperaug High School as one of the top schools in the state, and a nationally recognized program. According to the report, Pomperaug is the #14 ranked school in Connecticut and nationally ranked the #521 best school in the nation, a silver medal award-winning program. The study compares high schools across the nation based on a number of variables, including proficiency test scores, college readiness and student-teacher ratio. Pomperaug came in at 96 percent efficiency in Math and 98 percent efficiency in Reading, both above the state average. PHS also ranked above the state average in college readiness.   The Region 14 budget for 2012-13 failed, 1,203 to 836 districtwide, at a Tuesday, May 8, referendum. The now failed budget, at $31,205,513, featured a 3.17-percent increase or  $959,484 over the 2011-12 budget of $30,246,029. Bethlehem Voters Yes: 170 No: 276 Woodbury Voters Yes: 666 No: 927 Voter turnout in Woodbury was approximately 24 percent. Voter Turnout at Region 14 Referendum Light, Poll Workers Say

Voter turnout figures are as of 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 8.

  Voter turnout in the Region 14 budget referendum, as of 3 p.m., was approximately 13 percent, according to poll workers at the Senior Community Center. Of the 6,586 eligible voters on the list, 855 people voted. Poll worker Andrew Harley said the turnout is light for a school budget vote but is picking up a bit. Polls close at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 8. Commencement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the largest college at UConn, was divided into two ceremonies Sunday, May 6, at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.

  Thousands of family and friends watched on Sunday afternoon as nearly 2,700 students from the University of Connecticut’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) became UConn graduates during commencement ceremonies at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. Representing 55 different majors from 23 departments, students received their diplomas in dual ceremonies Sunday in disciplines ranging from journalism, psychology and political science to communications, human development and family studies.
