Make a Promise for World Oceans Day
This Saturday is World Oceans Day, a day where communities around the globe act to learn more about our oceans and take action to help conserve them.
One of the primary organizers, The Ocean Project, is inviting everyone to take ocean conservation personally by sharing an Ocean Promise online.
They say: “Under this year's World Oceans Day theme of ‘Together we have the power to protect the ocean,’ we are showing how small actions can add up to make a big difference. People everywhere can join the Ocean Promise drive by changing ONE habit in their lives that helps result in a healthier ocean.”
They offer some suggestions. You could promise …
• to bring reusable bags to the grocery store
• to use a reusable water bottle
• to take shorter showers
• to take public transportation to school/work once a week
• to only eat sustainably harvested seafood
• to participate in a litter clean-up
We offer some ideas as well: http://www.maritimeaquarium.org/long-island-sound/conservation
And we want to celebrate your promise. Here are three ways you can share with us: 1) come by The Maritime Aquarium on Saturday and fill out a World Oceans Day Promise sheet; 2) attend Saturday’s Bridgeport Bluefish game (first pitch at 6:05 p.m.) where we’ll have a Touch Tank with live animals and World Oceans Day Promise sheets; or 3) post your promise on our Facebook page on Saturday.
From all the promises we collect, we’ll give a small gift to one randomly selected response.
The World Oceans Day folks want to learn about your promise too. They would be excited to have you put your promise on a sign, take a picture of you holding it, and post it on their Facebook page. Details at http://worldoceansday.org/promise
Of course, the actions we all take to help the oceans will first help our hometown piece of the seas, Long Island Sound.

Centerpiece of the South Norwalk ("SoNo") waterfront neighborhood of Norwalk, The Maritime Aquarium features sharks, seals, sea turtles and other animals of Long Island Sound and its watershed. A celebrated place for family fun, the Aquarium also features Connecticut's largest IMAX movie theater, plus animal encounters at sea during our research vessel's study cruises.
