Severe Weather Expected Today: Thursday, July 26

Thursday night's temperatures are expected to dip by 20 degrees but still be in the 70s, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS is forecasting moderate to severe thunderstorms for Thursday. The main threats could be a possible derecho.

The National Weather Service is forecasting moderate to severe thunderstorms which may produce damaging winds, hail and even tornadoes for Thursday, July 26, in Connecticut.

The Weather Channel's Severe Weather Expert Dr. Greg Forbes stated that a derecho may occur during the morning hours from portions of New York State to central and southern New England.

"Derechoes are large clusters of thunderstorms that produce widespread wind damage, usually as a result of one or more curved lines of thunderstorms known as bow echoes," according to the Weather Channel's What Is A Derecho? page.

The National Weather Service is forecasting the following for Middlebury and Woodbury.

Middlebury

Thursday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with hail, damaging winds, and gusty winds. Partly sunny, with a high near 86. Southwest wind 5 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Thursday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 1 a.m. Some storms could be severe, with hail, damaging winds, and gusty winds. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Woodbury

Thursday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with heavy rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 90. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 7 and 8 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
