NHS, PHS Athletics Advance in State Tournaments

Both Pomperaug and Nonnewaug were in action Tuesday, with three teams advancing to second round play today.

An action packed afternoon on the diamond saw three local squads move on and one go home in the first round of the baseball and softball state tournaments.

#2 Pomperaug baseball (18-3) dominated #31 Fairfield Ludlow in the first round of Class ‘L’ play. Next up for the Panthers is South West Conference rival #15 Newtown at home today at 3:30 p.m.  Newtown beat #18 Bristol Central 8-4 in their opener Tuesday.

#8 Nonnewaug baseball (15-6) rolled over #25 Bullard Haven 8-1. The Chiefs will now host #24 Stonington, who put up 23 runs in their first round game, today at 3:30 p.m. for a chance to reach the Class ‘M’ quarterfinals.

#17 Pomperaug softball (13-8) edged past #16 Norwich Free Academy 8-5 yesterday. They move on to face the Class ‘LL’ top seeded Westhill Vikings, who are coming off a first round bye, today at 4 p.m.

#17 Nonnewaug softball (14-6) fell in a lopsided affair to North Branford 15-0 and were bounced from the Class ‘M’ state tournament. The loss concludes their season.
