Hike at the Whittemore Sanctuary

The public is invited to experience the change of seasons and explore the trails at the Whittemore Sanctuary in Woodbury, one of the preserves of Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust, during a free hike on Saturday, October 15 at 10 a.m. The Whittemore Sanctuary is located on Route 64, just a short distance south of Quassy Amusement Park. The hike is non-strenuous and lasts about 1.5 hours. Hikers should meet in the Whittemore parking lot, off Route 64, wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.

During the hike, Flanders land management volunteers and hike leaders Geoff Whan and Dick Leavenworth will provide insight into the history of the sanctuary, including its use producing charcoal for Waterbury factories and the Whittemore family’s commitment to forest and woodland management. Recently, the CT DEEP, which holds an easement on the property, sent a letter to Flanders in recognition of the excellent maintenance of the property, citing well-marked trails and sufficient visitor parking.
