Baseball Fans: Weigh in on Historic Collapses

Both the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves' playoff hopes were dashed last night.

Wednesday night was a great night to be a baseball fan, unless you're a fan of the Boston Red Sox or the Atlanta Braves.

The two teams, which earlier in the year held substantial divisional and/or wild card leads, were eliminated from postseason contention during their final games of the regular season.

The Red Sox squandered a 9-game wild card lead, which they held as recently as Sept. 3, by going 7-19 down the stretch, including Wednesday's heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles to complete the fade. The Tampa Bay Rays won their final game in thrilling fashion, defeating the already playoff-bound New York Yankees 8-7 in 12 innings.

The Braves, meanwhile, gave away the 10 1/2-game lead they held over the now wild card-winning St. Louis Cardinals on Aug. 26 with poor play throughout the month of September. That was capped by an almost unimaginable 4-3, 13-inning loss to the AL East champion Philadelphia Phillies.
