When and how did your business get started?

Not long before I graduated from The Ohio State University, I decided opening an antiques retail business would be my next big step. This idea came to me after a long internship as an apprentice to an art gallery owner. Once I realized I had the know-how to run a business on my own I started making strides to get back to Connecticut as soon as possible so I could begin the long journey to business ownership. My father was, and still is, my biggest advocate. Despite hearing negative feedback from nearly everyone I knew at the time, my dad kept reassuring me and encouraged me to keep walking forward without hesitation. By mixing my love of art, history, and antiques, Sunshine was born.

Why did you choose to start your business in Woodbury?

When I was a kid, every Sunday my dad and I would "go picking." Sometimes it was at other shops just like Sunshine, sometimes flea markets or tag sales, and sometimes we came to Woodbury for the Connecticut Antiques Trail. Little did I know then that someday I would be a shop owner along this magnificent trail! When I came back to Connecticut to start my business, I knew I wanted to deal with antiques and vintage items mostly because of my love for history and hand-crafted goods but also because I hold the environment very dear and a resale shop would allow me to recycle items that may have otherwise been forgotten. I was certain Woodbury would be the ideal town with a mixture of both old and young families, those looking to sell and those looking to buy, and a long list of already successful antique shops.

What is your business best known for?

Sunshine has come to be known for our hand crafted and customizable harvest tables made locally with reclaimed barn wood. We are also known for our consignment services and almost-daily new arrivals. Sunshine has become a treasure trove for antique and vintage lovers looking for an eclectic collection to browse through.

What's something interesting about your business your customers might not know?

Customers may not be aware that a huge amount of research goes into pricing all of the items that come in. Just about everything in the store is priced lower than it's true value because I want to offer affordability for those who love antiques but don't have a huge disposable income. I also want to keep the market for antiques flowing because the quality of craftsmanship in antiques and vintage items is exceptional in the light of today's world. True craftsmanship is becoming harder to find, however, by keeping antiques in our daily lives we retain a better sense of appreciation for these items and perhaps they will inspire the younger generations to get back into the art of hand-made goods.
