Region 15 Releases Community Budget Survey

Following two years of flat budgets, school officials ask for voter's opinions before a proposed budget is released.

In advance of Region 15 Superintendent Dr. Frank Sippy’s announcement of his proposed budget later this month, school officials are reaching out to Middlebury and Southbury voters to get their take on the upcoming budget.

The region has had a flat increase the past two years, and proposals of $60,251,578 have passed referendum twice.

  • 2011: Region 15 Referendum Passes

Last year’s budget saw spending increases in salaries, insurance and transportation, from the previous year. The budget remained flat though, due to reductions in facilities and instructional costs, along with a large reduction in tuition costs from the 2011-12 fiscal year.

This year’s budget may see an increase in funding for security purposes, as is expected in many regions across the state. One of the initial questions on the survey asks voters where their level of support is for security funding.

Other questions such as “What motivates you most to come to the polls for the School Budget Referendum?” and “Do you vote based upon the percentage increase or do you focus on the details of the budget?” are also asked in the survey.

The survey closes on Feb. 7 at 5 p.m. The results of the survey will be posted on the region’s website during the week of Feb. 11.
