Region 14 BOE Lends Support to Asbestos Abatement at Mitchell

Additional districtwide improvements are not off the table yet. Region 14's Board of Education intends to address possible districtwide improvements at a later date.

 

The Region 14 Board of Education lent its support to moving forward with the initial bonding process for asbestos floor tile abatement and replacement at .

Board member Gary Suslavich, at the Monday, April 23, meeting at , said the bonding amount, if approved, will be $325,000. He said the asbestos abatement and tile replacement at MES cannot wait.

Director of Fiscal Services Jim Reese told Patch after the meeting that the board decided not to move forward with a districtwide maintenance bond project at this point and will instead look into a more comprehensive project for district improvements.

That project, if supported by the board, will be brought before voters at a future referendum.

Praise for Professors

Michael Murphy, a Region 14 teacher and Team Beta advisor, was honored by the board for his receipt of the . Team Beta is the robotics team at Region 14.

The award is given to a mentor who demonstrates outstanding dedication to the team and is given to only 51 individuals worldwide.

"Mr. Murphy is the best role model any student could ask for because he is inspiring and encouraging," said student .
said Murphy spends more than 40 hours a week working on Team Beta projects during the busier times.

"It's another full time job," he said, adding that Murphy is a wonderful teacher and mentor. "If I grow up to be half the person he is, I will be proud."
