Nonnewaug Students Say Some Renovations Needed

Woodbury voters are asked to go to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots on a proposed $63.8 million renovation project for Nonnewaug High School.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Woodbury Senior Community Center and at Bethlehem Town Hall for Bethlehem voters.

Students at NHS said their school is in need of repairs, particularly the sports fields.

"I don't think all of it's necessary," senior Mike DeGrazia said. "But the turf fields need it most -- you can definitely roll an ankle."

Junior Ted Michener agreed, adding that the "cafeteria is pretty bad," too.

Junior Allison Valluzzo said the renovations are "definitely necessary."

"Our school is outdated," she said, and it has an adverse effect on students' learning. "It's hard to focus when it's 90 degrees in the building."

Along with new playing fields and air conditioning, students also said they need a larger auditorium that can fit the whole student body and usable tennis courts.
