Nonnewaug Receives Accreditation, Praise from NEASC

Congratulations to NHS!

After visiting in 2013, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges has awarded Nonnewaug High School continuing accreditation status.

In a December letter to NHS Principal Andrew O'Brien, the the Committee of Public Secondary Schools complemented the school's "challenging and measurable 21st-century learning expectations for students, which address academic, social and civic competencies."

The Committee had high praise for "the multitude of extracurricular clubs, activities and programs;" "the dedicated NHS teachers, who demonstrate leadership and initiative;" and "the productive and expansive parent, community, business, and higher-education partnerships that support student learning," among other accolades.

The Agriscience Program also received high marks for its "depth of understanding, application of knowledge, inquiry and problem solving...and authentic learning opportunities, both in and out of school..."

The NEASC had two constructive recommendations for Nonnewaug: first, that the school "explicitly identify on school-wide rubrics the level at which students have met the targeted achievements," and second, to "confirm implementation of the plan to insure every student is enrolled in one heterogeneously grouped core class."

Next up, Nonnewaug will work on implementing those recommendations throughout the current school year, and present a Special Progress Report to the NEASC by September 1, 2014. Both steps are "consistent with the Committee's follow-up procedures."
