Young children and their adult companions will discover exciting nature adventures at the new program, “Flanders Story Time,” sponsored by Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust, beginning September 7, 2012.

The story times are held on Fridays from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the Van Vleck Farm and Nature Sanctuary Trail House on Church Hill Road.

Weekly topics are designed to encourage children ages 3 to 5 and adults to explore nature, discover art and learn about farming together. Live animal demonstrations, specimens to observe and touch, crafts and nature walks on Flanders’ 200-acre campus are all part of investigating the great outdoors.

Day care classes, Mom’s groups and “play dates” are welcome to attend the story times. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

“Flanders Story Time” is free for Flanders’ members. The cost for non-members is $5 per person. So that there will be enough materials for every child to participate, advance registration is required.

To register, call Flanders at (203) 263-3711, extension 10. For more information, visit www.flandersnaturecenter.org.

Today's drug prohibition is getting violent criminals off the street - how many are in prison rightRead More now? Abuse of crack cocaine, heroin and the like have been proven to alter the brain chemistry, changing the user's personality, and frequently making them violent when they otherwise would not hurt a fly. These drugs are also used to benefit people who need them as prescribed by doctors. Tobacco has no such benefits. And skydiving? What does that have to do with tobacco? Does the skydiver harm other's health a month or more after he/she's been on the ground? No. Tobacco smoke does. It's called third hand smoke. Value? How can you compare art and entertainment with smoking? Anybody can attend an art gallery and not adversely affect anybody else. Any normal person can watch TV or play video games without committing suicide or harming anybody. Smoking hurts everybody and helps no one every time a smoker lights up. Drugs and alcohol, when used in moderation or under the direction of a doctor, can be helpful. Tobacco can not make the same claim.
