Woodbury Budget: What Happens Next

First up is a Woodbury Board of Finance meeting scheduled for Monday, July 29.

Since the Woodbury municipal budget was rejected for the third time at the July 25 referendum and the subsequent recount confirmed the results, here's what happens next.

Woodbury First Selectman Gerald 'Jerry' Stomski told Patch that if the Board of Finance fails to get the budget approved or to set the mil rate by August 1, the Board of Selectmen will have to set the mil rate.

Board of Finance Chairman Bill Butterly told Patch the board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, July 29, in the Shove Conference Room, to discuss options.

Butterly said the finance board presented a formal request to Stomski, requesting direction and guidance from legal counsel on the course of action to be taken by the Boards of Selectmen or Finance with regard to:

  • The basis for and establishment of a tax rate
  • The laying and collection of taxes

Butterly said the finance board asked that guidance be given prior to the Monday meeting.

What are people saying?

"I don't recall any time in the past 35 years that I have been in town, that the Board of Finance failed to get their budget passed," Stomski told Patch via e-mail. "The people around town who have contacted me and that I have spoken with seemed to be confused about the Board of Finance's presentation at the Town Meeting and also how it was printed in the newspaper, that somehow the municipal budget failing to pass would impact the school's already approved budget. It appears that the voters were confused with the budget presentations that were prepared and submitted to the town by the Board of Finance."

Butterly said he knew voters were sending a message after the last failed referendum but he wasn't sure what they were trying to say, so he asked for clarification.

Voters and the finance board chairman weighed in on this article: So Woodbury: What's the Problem with the Budget? They are discussing why they think people rejected the budget, taxes and Region 14, among other topics.
