First Selectman Gerald Stomski confirmed a teenager on a scooter was struck by a car on Route 6 this morning, Friday, Sept. 7.

He said the teenager was transported to a local hospital but he has no word on the condition at this point.

Initial reports indicate the teenager may have traveled in front of a car before being struck but Stomski could not confirm that at this point.

Route 6 is closed north of Route 61 and traffic is being rerouted accordingly, Stomski said.

I hope the teen is okay. I've encountered several youngsters riding scooters, especially this past summer. The problem as I see it is similar to the bicyclists that are traveling a high rate of speed. These people are going fast enough that they must be very mindful of debris on the side of the road so avoid an object they suddenly veer out into the driving lane of motorists (not saying that this is what happened in this case, just generally speaking). Essentially, all of the various drivers need to pay more attention and to drive a reasonable speed for their vehicle and conditions.
