Middlebury Police Arrest Vermont Man in Connection With Crime Spree

Police say the man is responsible for a series of car thefts and vandalisms in town during September and October of 2012.

Aware that police had active warrants out against him, a Vermont man turned himself in to Middlebury Police Wednesday afternoon on multiple charges stemming from an alleged crime spree last year.

Police charged Jonathan J. Grassi, 28, of Rutland, VT, with:

  • Third-degree larceny
  • Conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny
  • Fourth-degree larceny
  • Conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny
  • Conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny
  • Conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny
  • Second-degree criminal trespass
  • First-degree criminal trover
  • First-degree criminal mischief

Police said Grassi's arrest stems from a rash of vehicle thefts and vandalisms that occurred in town during September and October of 2012.

"Officer Blick and Officer Adams were the investigating Officers and a lot of leg work went into these investigations," Acting Police Chief Richard Wildman said.

In addition to the active warrant for Grassi's arrest, police had secured an extradition order from Superior Court that was valid throughout New England and New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Mid-Atlantic states.

Grassi posted $10,000 bond after being processed at 12:45 p.m. on Oct. 30. He went back to Vermont after posting bond, police said, and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court on Nov. 11.

Middlebury Police will be going to Vermont on Thursday, Oct. 31, to pick up Grassi's co-conspirator, who is being held without bail in Rutland, VT. The co-conspirator waived extradition, police said.

The New England State Police Intelligence Network assisted Middlebury Police with obtaining addresses and information on the subjects in Vermont.
