ME: Driver in Thursday's Fatal Accident Suffered Massive Heart Attack

State inspectors will also be checking the vehicle for any possible defects that could have led to the crash.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the driver in Thursday’s fatal accident on Route 63 suffered a massive heart attack before going off the road.

Wolcott resident Raymond Widziewicz’s car went off the roadway near the I-84 east offramp for exit 17 Thursday afternoon, striking several obstacles before coming to a stop. First responders at the scene found the 76-year-old unresponsive.

The heart attack is listed as the official cause of death and the reason Widziewicz’s car swerved off the road.

Inspectors with the state Department of Motor Vehicles Safety Division will be examining the car on Monday to check for any defects that might have contributed to the accident, according to Middlebury police.
