Dump Truck Crashes into Woodbury River

The driver reportedly swerved to avoid hitting an animal.

A man reportedly escaped serious injury this morning when the dump truck he was driving crashed into the Nonnewaug River.

According to Woodbury Fire Chief Janet Morgan, the man was driving on Route 6 near Mill Road, close to Wood Bridge, at 11 a.m. when he swerved to avoid hitting an animal. The driver reportedly lost control and the dump truck landed in the river that runs along the road.

The truck was from the Newtown Pool Company and was carrying a load of dirt, Morgan said. The driver suffered minor injuries, she said, including a laceration to his head and a scuff on his elbow.

Pat McDougall of Newtown Pool said the driver, Drew McDougall, was transported to Waterbury Hospital.

The 911 call came in from someone who drove by, Morgan said. Two heavy duty wreckers are going to pull the truck out of the river today.
