Patch’s Poll: Should Illegal Immigrants Who Came Here as Children Face Deportation?

The Obama administration said it will stop deporting some illegal immigrants who are under the age of 16. What are your thoughts on this?

President Barack Obama announced last week that his administration will stop deporting illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children and who pose no security threat.

According to CNN, under the new policy, people younger than 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation.

These youths will also have to prove they have been in the country for at least five years, the news network said.

Obama said his executive order would make immigration policy “more fair, more efficient and more just,” according to CNN.

"This is not amnesty. This is not immunity. This is not a path to citizenship. It's not a permanent fix," the president said.

The issue has sparked debate among news organizations, political pundits and ordinary citizens, as to whether this is a good move now.

On a local level, Connecticut saw a similar situation like this back in 2004, when a Norwich Free Academy graduate, Majan Jean, was facing deportation because she came to the U.S. illegally when she was 12, according to the Hartford Courant. She avoided being sent to her native Haiti because of legislation that was pending at the time in Congress.

Have Your Say

Do you think illegal immigrants, brought here as children and now under the age of 16, should face deportation? Regardless of their social standing in society? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

We ought to adopt Mexico's immigration policy. Liberals' heads would be coming off. This is the worst of all worlds. Obama is rewarding illegal behavior and we're only going to see more of it.

These students grew up here. They are American in everything but paperwork. Why anyone would think they should be deported is nonsense to me.

Ronald De Rosa needs to get his poll right... Obama's order was for 'children' under 30 YEARS OLD who were brought here BEFORE 16 YEARS OLD and who have lived here for at least 5 YEARS so why is the poll only about children under 16??? I don't care if they're still in diapers, ILLEGAL ALIENS DON'T BELONG HERE regardless of age, gender, how they got here, how much family they have, etc.!!!

If you are here illegally, you have no right to be here. I do not care why you are here or how you got here. No one has a right to be in this country outside of people born here legally.

I absolutely LOVE your rationale, "American in everything but paperwork." Not true! These "kids" have been battling with their parents for paples, assisting with fraud, upholding everything about their culture in their homes with parents who don't speak English. How typical is that for the average American family? Get real. I work in a large metro school district, and this is the way it is. Seldom do hispanics, particularly mexican children, assimilate. They pretty much cluster with their 'homies' speaking Spanish, cursing American, and feeling entitled to free school, breakfast/lunch, meds, social services, Section 8...Doesn't sound like American values to me!
