Black Bears in Woodbury

Our dog chased a black bear away this morning. We live in north Woodbury off of Brushy Hill. Beautiful animal making a big comeback here in CT. Keep your pets in view people.

Cory Maitz was in possession of an illegal firearm which he was absolutely wrong to have done. But he encountered a 460lb black bear face to face IN HIS GARAGE! I'm not so sure I would call shooting it a crime in this situation, especially if you have children or are in fear for your own safety. All part of the reason we have the right to bear arms in this country. If the gun was legal I'd call this a wash.

@Barbara. I see no correlation between the Maitz incident you've cited and your proposed potentiality of a large breed dog being walked. Further, you claim a "knee-jerk" reaction by Maitz. Being that it was widely reported that the bear not only entered Maitz's yard but did in fact also enter his garage; I call foul on your knee-jerk comment. Frankly we don't have the all the details of the incident. The bear may have even been attempting to enter the main house and that's when Maitz shot it. When I see a comment like yours I chalk it up to "projection" on your part. With "projection" we see folks doing just that, projecting their own (often irresponsible) behaviors onto others. Just because you are afraid of what you would do in a given situation doesn't mean that others would do the same.

Thanks for the Psych 101 analysis. This was simply a proactive cautionary suggestion to large breed dog owners which I received from other members of the Newfoundland Club of New England.

Barbara, it's mind boggling that you voicing a legitimate concern, stemming from a precautionary article about a bear sighting, can put the "usual cast of characters" into attack mode. It is legal in CT to shoot a bear to protect yourself, or another party, if there is imminent danger. However, according to EVERY article (and the police report) on the Maitz incident, the bear entered his garage and then wandered into his back yard which is where Maitz shot him. There was no personal threat and the bear was not trying to enter his house. What no one has bothered to mention is that Maitz was also arrested for criminal possession of a pistol. So to recap, a man who for undisclosed reasons, was forbidden by law to own a firearm, shot a non threatening bear for roaming into his yard (most likely) looking for food. Mr. Rocha shot a bear that was up a tree in his yard raiding a bird feeder. Projection, I don't think so.

Julie Sutton tells us about the the usual cast of characters into attack mode. Are you serious? You are the one who came on Patch and attacked everyone under the Woolley Bulley screen name and then got caught.
