Robert Smith, World War II Veteran and Pilot

The Woodbury resident was a past president of a flying club based out of Oxford Airport.

Mr. Robert W. Smith passed away Dec. 12, 2013, at his home in Woodbury. He was the husband of the late Jeanne (Skiff) Smith.

Born in Waterbury on Aug. 22, 1924, he was a son of the late William and Anna (Gans) Smith, and had worked for many years in the rubber and plastics industry in sales and marketing.

Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was an avid pilot and former squadron commander in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a former member and past president of the Sigma Six Flying Club, based at Oxford Airport, and a longtime member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

He was active for several years in Therapy Dog visits to hospitals and nursing homes.

He leaves a daughter, Alison Whitaker of St. Augustine, Fla., and a sister, Virginia Marano of Waterbury. He was predeceased by a son, Carter A. Smith.

Burial will be in new North Cemetery, Woodbury, in the spring. There are no calling hours. The Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. is assisting with the arrangements.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Middlebury Congregational Church, P.O. Box 268, Middlebury 06762-0268.
