Obituary: Lois F. Matthews

Formerly of Middlebury, Lois F. Matthews was a veteran member of the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Middlebury Congregational Church.

 

Lois F. Matthews, 92, of Waterbury, died peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, November 28, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital’s Vitas Unit. She was the widow of Henry A. Matthews.

Matthews was born February 7, 1919 in Woodbury, daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Young) Fray.

Formerly of Middlebury, she was a veteran member of the Women’s Auxiliary, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the .

Matthews loved to knit. She knitted sweaters for Middlebury residents and knitted baby blankets and outfits for newborns for the area hospitals. She was an avid fan of the UConn men and women’s basketball teams.

Matthews was lovingly known as "Gram." She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Platt and her husband George; her son, Donald Matthews and his wife Sharon; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her six brothers.

 

Visitation: Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2 at the Woodbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 2 School St. 

Services:  Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Middlebury Cemetery on Cemetery Road.
