Affordable Housing For Vets and Their Families

MCCA Baffled by Low Response to Subsidized Veteran's Housing

MCCA (Midwestern Connecticut Council of Alcoholism) has two newly remodeled units available for veterans and their families to rent. The two rental units are located in Vet House II, a grant subsidized property.

Vet House II, conveniently located on New Street in downtown Danbury, is designed to provide affordable housing for veterans and their families who may be at risk for homelessness. To date, two of the three units remain empty and MCCA’s President and CEO, Joe Sullivan is baffled. “We’re surprised that we haven’t had more vets applying for these permanent housing units.” He added, “They’re well-designed, nicely renovated and very affordable. We’re shocked that there has not been more interest.”

Veterans wishing to come to Danbury will find a welcoming community, according to Dawn Wilson, Recovery Supports Manager for Vet House I and II. Wilson explained that, “We’re looking to make the veterans (and their families) part of the community. And this is something that many vets have not had.”

Vet House II was developed with the belief that housing needs for veterans and their families would be on the rise. And perhaps this is the case, but just not in the Danbury area. While it makes sense for veterans in Danbury to utilize this permanent housing, it is not a requirement that they be a Danbury resident. If a veteran is in need of housing and qualifies and wants to relocate to the Danbury area that is fine. Single vets are welcome as well.
