Halloween House in Middlebury Goes All Out for Trick-or-Treaters

But that's not the only reason the Middlebury house is decorated for All Hallow's Eve. The owners collect donations for the Middlebury Food Bank.

You can't miss the Three Mile Hill Road house. For starters, there's a giant spider with glowing red eyes in the middle of the yard.

There's also a speakeasy with an alien coming through the door, a witch cop and a mad scientist's lair.

For the past 36 years, Dan Hitt and his family decorated his childhood home in Ridgefield and now, his Middlebury home. They've amassed quite the collection of spooky stuff and love to share it with others.

But they also like to give back. Toward the front of his yard, there's one decoration he calls special attention to — the donation bin for the Middlebury Food Bank. Last year, people donated approximately 74 pounds of food.

This year, Hitt said he thinks they've collected more than that.

"Donations have been coming in every day," he said.

So what's new this year?

"We're excited to have more skeletons," Hitt said the night before Halloween. "You can't have too many skeletons."

Every night leading up to Halloween, Hitt and his family are in the yard, creating ghosts that fly in the wind and adding the finishing touches to a haunted sea captain on a haunted dock. They typically start decorating in September, he said.

The sea captain and skeleton crew are a display from years past that he brought back this year, by converting old pallets into a dock, complete with a creepy lobster trap.

If you stopped by the house last year, you may remember the singing pumpkins. They will make an appearance this year too, if the weather behaves. Check out the forecast here.

Hitt said there's more to come too.

"We'll be working tonight and tomorrow, during the day," he said. "We're not done yet!"
