The Pomperaug Valley Garden

Club will sponsor an important fundraiser when antiques consultant and

appraiser Bernie McManus, of Woodbury, will give verbal evaluations of family

treasures and heirlooms.  Those attending

are welcome to bring up to two items to be verbally appraised for a fee of $5

each.  The event is set for Tuesday,

March 11 at the Woodbury Senior Center, 265 Main Street South.  The doors will open at 10:30 with a silent

auction and a brief talk by Mr. McManus on the art of conducting

appraisals.  Mr. McManus will be

available to provide appraisals until 12 noon.

The auction will be a

treasure hunt and will feature carefully selected donated items of various

shapes, sizes and value.  While the value

of each item will be stipulated, there will be a low reserve.  The auction will end at 11:30a.m. Attendees

are encouraged to participate in the silent auction and to partake of an

enticing array of refreshments.

Mr. McManus has been a

professional appraiser for over forty years, appraising all periods of

antiques, fine arts and old and rare books.

He has conducted appraisals for clients and estates throughout the

Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as Florida, Michigan and the US

Virgin Islands; he has appraised for Columbia University and the University of

Michigan.  He has conducted appraisal

fairs to benefit the Waterbury Lions Club, Christ Church, Roxbury, the New

Milford Democratic Town Committee, the Woodbury Democratic Town Committee

Scholarship Fund, the Southbury Food Bank, and many smaller groups.  He has also been an adjunct professor at C.W.

Post Long Island University, lecturing on antique furniture and decorative

arts, and has served as president of the

Connecticut Antiques Dealers Association and the Woodbury Business

Proceeds from this event

benefit Woodbury and area residents in the form of beautification projects, the

construction of swags and wreaths at holiday time for public buildings, a

college scholarship, various outreach projects, and monthly garden-oriented

programs to which the public is invited.
