Get Your Trot on, Turkeys!

Can you believe Thanksgiving Day is 2 weeks away?  When most of us think of Thanksgiving, we think about family, turkey and football, but another tradition that has been around for many years is gaining popularity in many communities.  The Turkey Trot!

For those of you who have participated in one of these events, you already know that the turkey trot is a great way to kick-start Thanksgiving Day with your family and friends.  It's a way to make you feel a little better about all the food you'll be enjoying that evening, because hey, you exercised that morning!

For those who aren't familiar with the friendly turkey day kick start to your metabolism, turkey trots range anywhere from a 5k (3.1 miles) up to a 10k (6.2 miles) some are more, some are less.  The atmosphere is incredibly friendly with everyone out to enjoy a nice run and you may even see some people dressed up as turkeys!

  • Fruit and yogurt smoothie and low fat granola.
  • Peanut butter and honey on toast
  • Oatmeal with brown sugar and almonds, skim milk and a banana.
If you wake up closer to start time, the following foods are good choices when consumed 30-60 min before exercise.

During the Race
Drink some water or Gatorade served along the course. Fueling during a race typically is not necessary with a 5K, if you’re tackling a marathon that is a different story.

Examples of good post race recovery options:

  • Since we are likely not running for much more than an hour, replenish fluids with water.
  • Snack ideas: smoothie with fruit and yogurt, graham crackers and peanut butter with low fat chocolate milk and a banana.
