Pothole Damage Coverage in your Auto Insurance Policy

If you incur damages due to messy roads and potholes, does your automobile insurance policy cover it? It might be more complicated than a "yes" or "no" answer.

These winter months have certainly made a mess of the roads, and on some it seems like the potholes are unavoidable! Those pesky things can deceive you, causing damage to you vehicle. But do you know if the damage is covered by your auto insurance policy? You would think “yes,” since the road should be maintained. The real answer is that in some cases it is; in others, it is not. The best way to find out is to have a conversation with your local insurance agent.

A typical car insurance policy provides coverage for collision, liability, comprehensive and medical. In the event that you are covered by pothole damage, your comprehensive coverage would kick in, subject first to your deductible. Should there be damage, it would be considered an at-fault accident and surcharges will come into play. The best thing to remember when it comes to potholes is to drive slowly to try to avoid them. Also keep in mind that by adding multiple cars or combining your auto policy with a home policy, you can get some savings!
