Where to Go Apple Picking in Connecticut

With the smell of autumn filling the air, it's time to head to the orchards and pick your own apples for cider, pies and other autumnal staples.

There's nothing quite like taking the family and retreating to a local farm on a fall afternoon. Freshly-pressed cider, a warm cider donut, the carving of a jack-o-lantern all contribute to each year's autumn memories, but there's also plenty of fun to be had outdoors.

It's apple-picking season, and Connecticut is flush with orchards and farms with trees begging to be picked so they can contribute to your pies, homemade ciders and daily efforts to keep the doctor away.

The following farms and orchards in Fairfield and New Haven Counties provide pick-your-own apples, according to PickYourOwn.org:

Blue Jay Orchards

March Farm

Drazen Orchards

Norton Brothers Fruit Farm

Zentek Farms

Silverman’s Farm

High Hill Orchard

Bishop’s Orchards

Beardsley Cider Mill

Visit PickYourOwn.Org for more info on each farm this picking season.

Just a heads up to anyone planning on picking. The supply this year is very slim. With the early warm weather, then the late frost, alot of the apples were lost. I would call ahead.

Hi everyone, Colby is correct. At Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, we were very lucky with the weather. We have an abundant crop of apples, including Macoun, Empire, Crispin, Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Spencer, McIntosh, Cortland, Jonamac, and Red Delicious. We also have Peaches and Pumpkins!

Good idea, Colby! Thanks for the tip. And Tim - how wonderful! I just love this fall season and apples are one of the reasons why!

Averill Farm in Washington Depot has apple picking too - and the most delicious cider donuts.

We went to Lyman's yesterday and they did well as we had tons of apples to pick. Gorgeous country up that way - well worth the drive and the prices were great.
