What's Up This Weekend: Holiday Fairs, Arts & Crafts, Phillips Farm Funday

From our neighborhood to the towns around us, if you're looking for something to do this weekend we've got you covered.


After a difficult week of wild weather and power outages all over Connecticut, folks may be feeling the affects of cabin fever.

Patch editors compiled a list of events taking place this weekend. While some event organizers informed us of postponements or cancellations, it is wise to call ahead to be sure events are still taking place.

Middlebury: Holiday Shopping Extravaganza

Where: Tula Family Enrichment Center, 489 Middlebury Rd, Middlebury

When: 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3

Cost: Free

Description: The Tula Family Enrichment Center presents its Holiday Shopping Extravaganza. Come do some holiday shopping and please bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots. Vendors include Pampered Chef, Scentsy, Avon, Mary Kay, various baked goods, children's accessories and many many more.

Woodbury: "Stash & Smash" Art Journal Making for Teens

Where: Woodbury Public Library

When: 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3

Cost: Free

Description: Teens in grades 6- 12 are invited to create small, hand-made journals using the "Smash and Stash" method - teens will use junkmail postcards, a variety of paper and small pictures to create colorful journals.  It's recycling at it's best!



New Canaan: American Pastoral Landscape Show

Where: Carriage Barn Arts Center at Waveny Park

When: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3

Cost: Free

Description: Curator Lydia Viscardi said: “American Pastoral celebrates our countries landscape in all media.  Our country has a rich art tradition in the genre of landscape.  This includes early American folk art paintings, grand expansive works introducing the public to the fantastic wild western frontier, the Boston impressionist school influenced by France, the WPA murals that introduced our citizens to rural and increasingly industrialized America, and late 20th and 21st century works depicting the United States and its vanishing wild places.”

Newtown: Halloween Skate Jam Fundraiser

Where: Dickinson Memorial Park

When: Noon Saturday, Nov. 4

Cost: $5

Description: The first ever Halloween Skate Jam Fundraiser costs $5 admission and $5 to enter. Prizes will be awarded for best trick, best costume and more.


Norwalk: Holiday Fair

Where: Norwalk Inn & Conference Center

When: 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3

Cost: Free

Description: Holiday Shopping to benefit Norwalk's children via the Norwalk Kiwanis Club. So many to choose from somthing for everyone: 31 Gifts, Alle Cat Jewelry, Chiapetta Olive Oil, Juice Plus, Lia Sophia Jewelry, Madison Handbags, Pampered Chef, Silpada Sterling Silver Jewelry, Stella & Dot Jewelry, Sublime Escentials, Tastefully Simple, Tuppeware.

Orange: Trunk-or-Treat

Where: High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road

When: Saturday, Nov. 3, 5:00 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: Orange's rescheduled night of trick-or-treating allows children to trick-or-treat in a central location from residents' cars.

Oxford: Holiday Fair

Where: St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 421 Oxford Road

When: Saturday, Nov. 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: $3

Description: The holiday fair will have many new features such as a regift it table, antique lace, lunch, hot chocolate and cookies. The quilt exhibit has a charge of $3.00.

Oxford: 41st Oxford Arts and Crafts Show

Where: Oxford Center School, 462 Oxford Road

When: Saturday, Nov. 3, 10 a.m.

Cost: Free

Description: This juried show offers stationery, pottery, herbal creations, jewelry, ornaments, handspun alpaca yarns, soft sculpture and totes.   Also featured will be handmade books and boxes, oil paintings, photography, metal crafts and folk art.  Other offerings include quilling, beeswax candles, soaps, candy and dried flowers.

Redding: Esteemed Neigbors: Helen Keller & Mark Twain

Where: Mark Twain Library

When: 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4

Cost: Free

Description: Join Twain enthusiasts Heather Morgan and Brent Colley as they discuss a remarkable friendship and learn about the Mark Twain Library's new exhibit on the topic.

Southbury: Phillips Farm Funday

Where: Southbury Land Trust, 500 Sanford Rd. in Southbury

When: Sunday, Nov. 4, 1:30 p.m.

Cost: Free

Description: An afternoon featuring haywagon rides, pumpkin hunts, treats and goodies, refreshments, coloring contest, prizes and guided hikes of a beautiful 100-acre Southbury farm.

Trumbull: Hazardous Waste Collection

Where: Indian Ledge Park, Trumbull, next to the BMX Facility

When: Saturday, Nov. 3, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cost: Free, Monroe, Easton or Trumbull ID required

Description: The annual hazardous waste drop off.



Wilton: Auditions for "The Drowsy Chaperone" at The Wilton Playshop

Where: Wilton Playshop

When: 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4

Cost: Free

Description: Beside the principal roles, there is a small ensemble cast of various unspecified characters of all ages. All roles must sing well and able to do standard musical theatre movement. Dance skills are required for the roles of Janet, Robert, George, Kitty and the two gangsters.
