Rabid Raccoon Alert in Bethlehem

The animal tested positive for rabies. Here's some telltale signs of rabid raccoons.

 

Update, 10:16 a.m.

Animal Control Officer Judy Umstead said the raccoon was near the Bethlehem Fairgrounds. She said the dogs killed the raccoon and were up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.

Two dogs were involved in a situation involving a rabid raccoon in Bethlehem, according to Bethlehem and Woodbury Animal Control Officer Judy Umstead.

The raccoon tested positive for rabies, she said. No other information was available.

How to Tell if a Raccoon is Rabid

The eHow website offered the following ways to identify a rabid raccoon:

  • A raccoon that is out in the middle of the day
  • A friendly raccoon
  • A raccoon that is aggressive without being provoked
  • A raccoon that is not walking well or is drooling
