A published report said FBI agents staked out the Democrats’ 5th Congressional District convention in Waterbury on May 14 as part of their investigation that has roiled the Democratic Party primary race, resulted in one arrest and cast suspicions on .
According to the Connecticut Post, the agents might have been trying to connect House Speaker Chris Donovan’s campaign officials with others suspected in a scheme to conceal the identities of campaign donors in violation of federal law.
On May 30, FBI agents arrested Donovan’s campaign finance director, Robert Braddock Jr., and since then Donovan has fired his campaign manager, and a supporter, corrections union treasurer Ray Soucy of Naugatuck, and a resident, Paul Rogers, who is an investor in a Waterbury smoke shop, have been identified as suspected co-conspirators.
The Post based its story on unnamed sources, Braddock has denied he is guilty, and Soucy and Rogers have declined to comment.
The other side of this is companies that need a government handout (loans, "grants", and the like) to exist. Goldman Sachs, GE, are just a few. I find it hard to believe Donovan was unaware of this. It is not likely that any candidate for Congress does not know who a $2500 donor is. Part of the problem is Republicans do it too. Politics is big business for too many. According to the Independence Caucus, 90% of federal campaign donations come from 1% of the population.
