Halloween House Helps Collect 74 Pounds of Food For Charity

The spirit of giving is often spoken of around November and December but in Middlebury, it came a little earlier this year.

Boys and ghouls descended upon the Hitt home on Three Mile Hill Road in Middlebury on Halloween night for traditional trick-or-treating.

Typically, that means getting treats but this year, folks gave them freely too, by way of donations to the Middlebury Food Bank.

"... We collected right around 74 pounds of food for the food bank and $7 cash," Dan Hitt said. "Thanks to the community for coming out. We'll do it again next year and see if we can do better."

Dan Hitt and his family are huge Halloween fans. For the past 35 years, they go all out and decorate their yard with singing pumpkins, a bar frequented by skeletons and aliens and Mighty Spidey, a giant spider that sits next to a giant web.

This year, they left out a donation bin in the days leading up to Halloween night and after, for people to leave non-perishable food items.
