PHILIP K. HOWARD DELIVERS KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT HARTFORD & NEW HAVEN COUNTY MEDICAL ASSOCIATIONS' ANNUAL MEETING

PLANTSVILLE, Conn. (OCT. 25, 2013) – The Hartford County Medical Association (HCMA) and the New Haven County Medical Association (NHCMA) hosted their historical Annual Meeting on Monday, October 21 at the Aqua Turf in Plantsville. Attendees included physicians, medical students, members of the Connecticut State Medical Society, and their significant others. The annual meeting began over 200 years ago and has grown in attendance ever since. The event featured over a dozen vendors, networking, award ceremonies, and a sit down dinner. This year’s Master of Ceremonies, NBC Connecticut’s Brad Drazen, delivered the welcoming speech at the dinner portion of the night and introduced the keynote speaker, Philip K. Howard, a nationally recognized attorney, speaker, and Founder and Chair of Common Good, a nonpartisan, nonprofit legal reform coalition. He is also the best-selling author of The Death of Common Sense and Life Without Lawyers and a contributor to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.

Mr. Howard delivered a powerful keynote address regarding why America needs health courts in order to reform the ever-rising U.S. health-care costs. He asserts that health courts would have judges dedicated full-time to resolving health-care disputes, who would make written rulings to provide guidance on proper standards of care. The rulings would set precedents on which both patients and doctors could both rely.

Several physicians were honored at the event: Henry E. Jacobs, MD, JD and Steven Wolfson, MD received the HCMA and NHCMA Distinguished Service Awards for the evening, respectively. HCMA Vice President Bollepalli Subbarao, MD, presented the inauguration of HCMA President, Timothy K. Chartier, MD. Similarly, NHCMA Jay Sokolow, MD, presented the inauguration of NHCMA President, David J. Hass, MD.
