How Cool Is That?!  Dissecting Owl Pellets
  (Grades K-5)

Wednesday, August 14th 3:00pm
Saturday, August 24th  11:00am

After an owl eats the small rodents, birds, and bugs that are a part of its nightly diet, its stomach can’t digest the fur, bones, teeth, feathers, and insect shells. Two times a day, an owl regurgitates the harder material along with indigestible items such as feathers and fur in the form of a tight pellet.

Participants will each receive 1 sterilized pellet, guaranteed to contain an interesting assortment of bones, fur, and teeth. With the help of Bone Sorting Charts (and Velya’s 11 years of owl pellet dissection experience), kids can identify their findings. Once the first bones are revealed, the enthusiasm and excitement in the room is contagious! Fee: $8.00 Registration Required. http://www.newmorn.com/general/classes.php

Velya Jancz-Urban, a certified CT teacher, and most recently Regional School District #12’s gifted/enrichment teacher, created “How Cool Is That?!” (Hands-On Science) because there just isn't enough time in a school day for hands-on activities due to the new importance placed on standardized testing.
