Velocity Print Solutions Closes Middlebury Plant

A printing company has closed the doors to its Middlebury production plant and taken with it 18 jobs.

Velocity Print Solutions, located at 199 Park Road Ext., has consolidated production into its existing Glenville, N.Y, plant, where it plans to expand operations, CEO Jim Stiles confirmed to HartfordBusiness

While 18 production jobs were lost due to the consolidation, a sales and customer service office will remain open in Middlebury, with a workforce of approximately 50 people, according to the Hartford Business article.

The move was reportedly announced in October and the doors closed on Dec. 31.

"In this very competitive print and related services market place we no longer found it feasible to maintain two separate production facilities, especially in such close proximity to each other," Stiles told the web site.

Digital "Going Paperless" initiatives like Paperless 2013 allege that the paper printing industry isn't good for the environment, which may have contributed to a loss of revenue for the printing industry in recent years.

Michael Makin, President and CEO of Printing Industries of America, challenges this notion, pointing out that "printing is the only medium with a one-time carbon footprint—all other media require energy every time they are viewed."

Do you think going paperless is the way of the future?
