Vacant Storefront: What Do You Want to See in This Spot?

This building has a New England feel and an empty feel.

This rustic-style building on Main Street South in Woodbury has a "sale or lease" sign outside and has been empty for years.

In the last Vacant Storefront, readers weighed in on what they want to see in the , a Mexican eatery.

Patch wants to know: What kind of business would you like to see in this rustic spot?

I would like to see my church in that spot. We'd fill it with quality people and bring an uplifting atmosphere to the environment. Our services and meetings would take place on Sundays and weeknights so we wouldn't impact the traffic. The business in the area would benefit from the exposure and in general we'd be a blessing to the community.

I'd love to see an antique mall in it. It would be a perfect addition to our town.

I agree-a perfect spot for a church.
Lori Marino March 08, 2012 at 04:52 PM
Yes, a church!

I wish it was up to us, but it isn't.

What Church is that? Is your congregation looking for a home?
Diana Chamberlain March 08, 2012 at 10:29 PM
A craft center -- weavers, potters, glass blowers, printmakers, jewelry makers, felters, spinners. Open studios that the public could visit. A small cafe/coffee shop. Talks and classes given by the crafters for adults and children.

Sounds like a good use for the space. I'd still like to see a book store in town. Sad when More Good Books closed.
Alice Bjornberg March 09, 2012 at 02:22 PM
That sounds like a good idea to me. How about including quilters also.

How about a business that will generate some tax revenu? A Micro Brewery would be a great idea.

Love the microbrewery/tasting room idea, too!

Great idea!

A book store, a nice clean affordable sit-down restaurant (I miss Barsi's) a craft co-op, a Panera Bread, a Dunkin :-), a Denny's, a Wild Wings, a consignment shop, a mini Cracker Barrel.
Sue March 11, 2012 at 12:50 PM
I like the micro-brewery idea, and the "Barsi's" idea, and Dunkin of course; but how about a Japanese-style cat cafe with wifi and study space; there would also be room for animal adoption on a small scale to highlight great pets from area shelters.

Loving the creative suggestions, guys! I got an e-mail from another reader saying he wants to see a bookstore with wifi and lunch menu. Happy Sunday and thanks for weighing in with all these cool ideas!

If it's an open floor plan, maybe a garden center in the vein of the late Lexington Gardens, possibly showcasing some of the area's "specialty" growers?
Wendy March 12, 2012 at 12:50 PM
Great for a church.. I could really see the community benefiting in a positive way because of it!

We got another comment on our Facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/WoodMiddPatch "Mo wrote: "Id love to see an outdoor gear/sports equipment store - something like REI or EMS, of course, an independent retailer would be best..."

To "Woodbury Connecticut" : The Church is called Connections Church (under Pastors Rocky and Bobbi Veach) and we're currently meeting in the Edmond Town Hall on Sunday mornings. The facilities are great and they are wonderful people to deal with. Our most immediate need is a location for Mid-Week services. Eventually we'd love to have our own building. Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.

How about a night club that draws popular national music acts ?
ctmom March 28, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Or a combination coffee shop/gallery/artists' space (either a cooperative type thing where one area is the REAL coffee shop and the rest could be a space for artists to actually work and sell their art, or else a gallery type arrangement like Marty's in Washington? I still think this town desperately needs a real coffee house, independently run but with a place to sip lattes and cappuccinos in comfort and relaxation.

A coffee shop is already opening in Woodbury, end of Nov. Will be located where Heavenly used to be..!
KCG September 25, 2012 at 12:33 PM
i am so glad about your store, Caroline! I love the rustic building and wish it would be occupied soon. I heard there is a limit on the septic system, so that is why a lot of the uses suggested cannot happen. Does anyone know if that is true?
