Is Northeast Utilities Planning to Send Jobs Overseas?

Connecticut's House Majority Leader is demanding the answer — and an investigation — on the Berlin-based company's plans.

Reports that Northeast Utilities is planning to send hundreds of Connecticut jobs offshore has drawn a rapid and firm response from Berlin's state representative.

“If the reports we are hearing today are true and Northeast Utilities is considering shipping good paying Connecticut jobs overseas — I’m outraged," House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz said in a press release issued Monday afternoon. "I’ve contacted Northeast Utilities and asked to discuss this matter immediately."

Aresimowicz, who represents Berlin and Southington in the Connecticut General Assembly, was apparently referring to an article published by the Hartford Courant that shed light on how the company's recent merger with NStar could lead to outsourcing in the IT Department.

Those reported plans for Northeast Utilities, which is based in Berlin, have also led to about a dozen complaints being filed at the Office of the Attorney General, according to The Courant.

"I support the Attorney General and the Consumer Counsel looking into this matter," Aresimowicz said. "I have also requested that the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority investigate this reported outsourcing and take all appropriate action.”

Northeast Utilities is the parent company of Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas.
