Bites Nearby: Misty Vale Deli

This deli on Berkshire Road offers affordable sandwiches to a wide spectrum of customer.

MISTY VALE DELI -- This deli is popular with commuters making the trek south on Route 34 as well as students from nearby Newtown High School needing a quick bite and police officers and construction workers who sometimes meet up in the deli's rather large parking lot.

With names such as "The Flagpole" and "The Sandy Hook," the deli's many different sandwiches cater to the Newtown spirit but appeal to nearly every demographic, particularly the bacon-loving crowd.

"The Flagpole" consists of chicken cutlet with ranch dressing, "lots of bacon," melted cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato on a hard roll.

The prices also will certainly appeal to the budget conscious as nearly all of the speciality sandwichs stay south of $5, which is one reason the deli has stayed popular going on six to seven years now, ever since it took over a liquor store there, staff members will tell you.

If this deli reminds you of other ones nearby, there's a good reason. The owners and operators are the same ones who run  on Main Street in Newtown, Rockwell's Deli in Woodbury, in Bethel, in Southbury and now a third location on Pecks Lane in Newtown.

Once you find a successful formula, all you need to do is stick with it.

Misty Vale Deli is located at 51 Berkshire Road, Sandy Hook. 203-426-1789. Hours are Mon - Sat 6am - 6pm.

Correction: Misty Vale is owned by the same owners who run Newtown General Store. An earlier version of this article listed the wrong affiliation.

This place sounded like the perfect spot for a Friday lunchtime bite with my daughter. I told her about "The Flagpole" sandwich overflowing with chicken, ranch dressing, and lots of bacon. Yum. So we took a drive to Sandy Hook, pulled up in front of the Misty Vale Deli, and looked around for the ramp. Hmmm. There was no visible ramp. My daughter said, "Maybe the ramp is in back. I'll go in and find out." She came back to my adapted van with a discouraged face. "No, Mom, there is no way for you to get in." We left and went to the Blue Colony diner instead. Please, Misty Vale owner, consider your disabled patrons and put up a ramp. I am not asking that you do a major renovation. Just install an inexpensive wheelchair entrance to your deli so that none of your potential customers, like me, is excluded. Linda Donahue of Southbury

My brother is a Police Sargeant in a neighboring town, and was stationed at one of the houses of a Sandy Hook Elementary victim, protecting the family from intrusions. The grieving father went to my brother's vehicle and said he was welcome to come into the house to eat or use the bathroom, but he declined, because this is the family's time and my brother did not want to intrude. Later, a state trooper relieved him for food/bathroom break. My brother was in uniform, was ordering food and drink at Misty Vale Deli on route 34 and asked to use the bathroom. The employee said there was no public bathroom. My brother said how he was guarding one of the families, he just needed to use a bathroom (and he was about to pay), and the guy still said no, not a public bathroom. A customer overheard it and told my brother to follow him to his house, he can use their bathroom, and so there was no purchase made and brother followed this local and caring indivdual so he could do what was needed. This happened to another cop too, with another customer walking away and having the officer use the bathroom at her home. It saddens me that a police officer on any day would be denied the opportunity of a restroom, as their vehicles don't come equipped with port-o-pots. It makes me extremely upset, that in this time of community coming together in the aftermath of these tragic events, that those men and women in service are denied in this manner. You will never receive my money.

I inquired about the bathroom situation concerning the Misty Vale Deli and the operator is correct the use of the stores toilet is against the Newtown Health Department code. The complaint should be addressed to the Newtown Health Department.

Hi Linda, I apologize for the delay in responding to your concern. I also apologize for the fact you had an unpleasant experinece attempting to patronize our establishment. In reguards to wheel chair access to our store, perhaps your daugter may not have noticed that the rear entrance to the store is on flat ground level. There is no step or incline to access the building. I wish we were aware of your situation on the day you were there, we would been morer than happy to assist you enter the store, or we would have come out to your vehicle and take your order then bring you your purchase if you felt it was still too difficult. In the future, if you decide you may want to give us another chance, you can always ask for Angel, he is the store manager and can assist you in any of your concerns. Thank You. Sincerely, Peter L. owner, Misty Vale Deli
