Bites Nearby: Hen of the Woods

This Southbury treasure is a favorite for breakfast and lunch.

This welcoming breakfast and lunch eatery is  inconspicuous in Southbury's Bennett Square shopping center. The cozy restaurant has a handful of simple tables and chairs, as well as outdoor seating in warm weather. Meals can be ordered to go, and most meals are under $10.

But the most important part of this understated cafe is the food. The kitchen serves up home-style favorites and creative specials. A recent score was a dazzling Spicy Curry Chicken Noodle Soup, which boasted cellophane noodles and chunks of sweet potato, and was served with thick slices of homemade bread.

In addition to soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches for lunch, breakfast boasts playfully named offerings, such as Green Eggs and Ham, which gets the "green" from spinach. Other breakfast items include pancakes, waffles and a variety of egg dishes.
