"Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial, Inc. is pleased to announce plans to construct a living trees memorial in Veterans' Memorial Park in Middletown, CT," the organization says on the home page of its website.
"The memorial will encompass a beautifully designed space that will include a tree planted for each of our State's heroes who gave their life serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. A personalized plaque will be displayed next to each tree."
Here's a news release from the organization calling on artists to propose designs for the memorial (see the attached documents for the original news release and details of the competition):
Calling All Artists! On behalf of the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial Committee, we welcome your participation in this Memorial Elements Competition. This will be the first of its kind STATEWIDE MEMORIAL to honor and forever remember the Connecticut military men and women who died while serving in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars. Soon this memorial will be built in Veterans Memorial Park in Middletown, CT. We need your creative help!
We are seeking to honor the lives lost in the War on Terror in a unique way. We will be planting a flowering tree for each of those who were called to duty and made the supreme sacrifice with their lives. The memorial will mean so much to those who have lost a loved one and by taking part in this competition, you will help us honor their sacrifice.
Details about our organization can be found on our website www.cttreesofhonor.com and specific rules concerning this competition are attached and on the website. The CT Trees of Honor Memorial Committee is looking forward to working with you to create a spectacular memorial that will reflect the dignity and selfless sacrifice of all veterans and especially those who did not return from Iraq or Afghanistan.
