River Dynamics 101 Talk Set For Southbury Library

In 2010, unusual weather patterns were the name of the game. Jim MacBroom has studied the Pomperaug River for years and he will talk about why flooding occurs, among other topics.

 

Following a record wet year in Connecticut and a year where the Pomperaug River received it has seen in its 80 years of recorded streamflow, people are talking about the changes they have observed in the river over the years.

To help residents and local officials understand why and how some of these changes happen, Jim MacBroom, P.E., will lead a presentation on River Dynamics from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the .

One of MacBroom's favorite subjects to talk about is rivers. He is a senior vice president at Milone & MacBroom, an environmental consulting firm in Cheshire, as well as a lecturer in River Processes and Restoration at Yale University.

"We couldn’t be more pleased to have Jim lead this presentation," said Carol Haskins, Outreach Director. "Professionally, he is incredibly knowledgeable about rivers in general, but also has an immense familiarity with the . He brings his students to the watershed every fall for field study and has been observing this river much of his life."

MacBroom will talk about how river channels can migrate across the landscape, how they transport sediment, and how they respond to rainfall.  Flood mitigation techniques and stream restoration will also be touched on during the presentation.
