Dancing with Our Heroes Gala Fundraising

The Southbury Fred Astaire Dance Studio, 316 Main St. South, welcomes everyone to support America’s veterans at the Dancing With Our Heroes Fundraiser Gala, starting at 6 p.m. Sunday, November 10, at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.
The New England Fred Astaire Studios participating intend to raise $200,000 for the construction of a Fisher House on the grounds of the West Haven VA.
Southbury Studio Manager Christian Lange said it broke his heart to learn that families often sleep in their cars to be near veterans who are visiting a VA for treatment.
The new 16,000 square foot Fisher House will provide free accommodations for veterans and their families.
While the project will cost an estimated $6 million, there are sponsors willing to match donations if the project can raise $3.
“This is important.  Our military did so much for us, it’s time for us to give something back.“  Mr. Lange said.
Southbury Fred Astaire Studio and each participating studio has donated 25 lessons to each hero willing to compete at the event.
One of the heroes who will dance with Mr. Lange in the pro-am event is Maggie Flahive, a parachute rigger while serving and one of the first females to go through jump school.  “I wanted to see if jumping would help me overcome my fear of flying.”
She said dancing competitively is a different kind of excitement.  “I’d rather dance.”
A Watertown resident, Ms. Flahive explained, “I’ve been wanting to dance for years but only recently found a studio close enough for me to do it.”
Mr. Lange added, “Dancing is great for returning veterans because the atmosphere is always cheerful and welcoming.  It helps you feel better and makes you happy.”
Channel 3 Anchor Hena Daniels will be master of ceremonies and the evening will include dinner, dancing, and a silent auction in addition to the dance competition.
