Audubon Center in Southbury Seeking Volunteers on Fridays

The Audubon Center at Bent of the River in Southbury is seeking volunteers for their Invasive Plant Eradication Team. In existence at the non-profit Audubon Center for over 10 years, volunteers work side by side with experienced staff members to remove invasive plants from the sanctuary fields and forest.

Jim Drennan, the Center’s land manager, stated that, “Invasive plants come from some place other than the greater New England area. Because they have no native insect predators, they spread like wildfire across the landscape. They out-compete our native plants for resources and some by outright poisoning of the soil, thereby, leading to the loss of our native species from the environment. Our team works diligently by removing them from the sanctuary and has made a huge impact on our local flora.”

Volunteers are needed every Friday from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Bent of the River Audubon Center at 185 East Flat Hill Road in the South Britain hamlet of Southbury. To learn more, and to volunteer, contact Jim Drennan at 203-264-5098 ext. 303 or email: jdrennan@audubon.org
