Hundreds to Walk at Quassy Amusement Park to Give All Babies a Healthy Start

Hundreds of families and business leaders will join together on Sunday, May 6 at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury to walk for stronger, healthier babies in the
Greater Waterbury March for Babies, a March of Dimes signature fundraising event to help end premature birth. Funds raised help support prenatal wellness programs, research grants, neonatal intensive care unit family support programs, and advocacy efforts.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk kicking off at 10 a.m. Participants will enjoy a live band, refreshments, a bounce house, face painting, and more.  To register, visit marchforbabies.org or marchofdimes.com/ct.  All walkers who raise $200 or more will receive an event t-shirt and those raising $350 or more will have the choice of a Macy’s or Kmart gift card.

Helping to lead the festivities will be two-year old Richard Mathew Alfes-Randis of Naugatuck.  Born nearly 10 weeks early, he weighed three pounds eight ounces and spent three weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.  He received surfactant, a therapy developed in part through March of Dimes funding, to help mature his tiny lungs.

“The March of Dimes, in addition to all its research,
awareness and efforts to put an end to premature birth, gave me a place to share my feelings and experiences on line, read stories others had shared and connect with mothers who had premature babies, and some who had lost their little angels,” said Thea, his mother.

Greater Waterbury March for Babies is sponsored by Quassy Amusement Park, 102.9 DRC-FM and Lamar.  Statewide sponsors are NBC Connecticut and Comcast, and
national sponsors are Kmart, Farmers Insurance Group, Cigna, Famous Footwear, Sanofi Pasteur, FedEx, Mission Pharmacal, Watson Pharmaceuticals, First Response, and United Airlines.

The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant
mortality. For the latest resources and information, visit marchofdimes.com or nacersano.org.  Find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Today's drug prohibition is getting violent criminals off the street - how many are in prison rightRead More now? Abuse of crack cocaine, heroin and the like have been proven to alter the brain chemistry, changing the user's personality, and frequently making them violent when they otherwise would not hurt a fly. These drugs are also used to benefit people who need them as prescribed by doctors. Tobacco has no such benefits. And skydiving? What does that have to do with tobacco? Does the skydiver harm other's health a month or more after he/she's been on the ground? No. Tobacco smoke does. It's called third hand smoke. Value? How can you compare art and entertainment with smoking? Anybody can attend an art gallery and not adversely affect anybody else. Any normal person can watch TV or play video games without committing suicide or harming anybody. Smoking hurts everybody and helps no one every time a smoker lights up. Drugs and alcohol, when used in moderation or under the direction of a doctor, can be helpful. Tobacco can not make the same claim.
