Optimum Health~Back to the Soil

 Optimum Health~Back to the Soil

Spring has sprung, the snow has gone, the trees are in bloom and we feel warm! Yay! We have all been waiting to shed the winter heaviness and thaw out. Coming out of hibernation mode feels good and we feel a freshness about us, and more alive.

Do you have indoor projects you did not finish or that book half read? These indoor habits can be a tough shell, hard to break. The buds are emerging, coming out of their little homes, and we can see the desire to do so too, coming out of our cocoon.

Throughout the eons of time, we lived mostly close to the soil, and depended on it for our wellbeing. As time has gone on, we are less connected to the earth, through the places we live and the computers we sit behind. Many buy food in cans and never see food growing in soil. Somehow, it is as if it is not a part of who we are, disconnected in many ways.

In this fast paced world, to be deeply grounded and rooted, is critically important for our overall well being and existence. Here are some great ideas to reconnect with the land and soil.

1. Dig Dirt and Grow Food

Getting your hands into the dirt is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to reconnect with nature. Make a plan to dig up a space, even if it is small, just grow something. Tend it, care for it and watch it grow. Studies have shown that gardening can bring a calm, help relieve depression, anxiety and lift your spirits.

2. Take a Hike~literally
Many opportunities exist right in your own backyard. What you need is right around you and can be explored and enjoyed. Parks and trails are well maintained, and provide a vast array of balance for our eco-system, and our bodies. They also provide some real, genuine opportunities for looking inside, reflecting, and making real connections with nature, dirt and the land.

3. Walk not Ride

If you are like me, you imbibed on extra complex carbs, nuts and seeds and brown rice, in attempts to keep warm and cozy. Like me, you might aso have a few pounds to walk off too.
Warmer weather makes it a sheer joy to be outside, for longer periods of time. Getting active clears out the winter cobwebs and gets things moving. Walking instead of driving surely helps save resources, for the earth and for you.

4. Kick off the Shoes
Any chance you get, take off your shoes and walk in the water, soil, sand, or grass. Literally connecting to the ground, connects you with nature, on a deeper level. Negative ions are present in the earth's offerings and are important for balancing you! You might even sleep better that night, after a day in nature.

5. All Things Outdoors

Outings of every sort are good for spring goodness and connection. Not limited to a day at the beach but taking every opportunity to get outside. Read your book out on the patio, have lunch outside, attend your farmers markets, and community music gatherings. There are many choices to make, in taking it all outdoors.
