Serious 3-Car Crash on Middlebury Road Monday

Accident closes Route 64 between Route 188 and North Street.

A three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Middlebury Road and North Street Monday afternoon shut down a portion of Route 64 and sent three to the hospital, one with serious injuries.

According to acting Middlebury Police Chief Richard Wildman, a 2004 GMC pick up truck operated by Francis Carisio, 26, of Jasmine Lane, Wolcott, was traveling eastbound on Middlebury Road (Route 64) just below Store Road in Middlebury when it veered into the westbound lane and struck the 2004 Kia GSX being operated by Carmela Varrone, 81, of Nutmeg Road, Middlebury, around 4:45 p.m. Monday.

Another vehicle, a 2011 Nissan Sentra operated by Kenia Severino, of Lockwood Road, Middlebury, swerved into the guardrails to avoid the truck. Severino’s vehicle also sustained damage from debris from the first collision.

Firefighters extricated Varrone from her vehicle and a Campion Ambulance Paramedic Unit transported her to Waterbury Hospital with serious injuries. Severino and a juvenile passenger were transported to Waterbury Hospital via the Middlebury Fire Department Ambulance with minor injuries. Carisio was not injured.

The accident closed down Middlebury Road between Route 188 and North Street for over an hour Monday afternoon. The state Department of Transportation responded and put down sand on oil, gas and other vehicle liquids that spread out almost 500 feet.

The case remains under investigation by Middlebury police.
