The Super Bowl is almost upon us, so football is the perfect theme for this week's Movie Mondays.
"Wildcats"
Goldie Hawn stars in this movie and she's charming, as always. She plays Molly, a high school track coach, who doesn't know a thing about football, but decides to apply for the vacant football coach position.
The trailer, in the video section of this article, really looks awful and doesn't do the movie justice. Ultimately, this movie is about perseverance in the midst of adversity, when everyone -- from ex-husbands to co-workers -- thinks you can't accomplish your goals.
Note: This movie contains colorful language, which explains why there's no best quote listed for this movie!
"Remember the Titans"
This movie is based on a true story and stars Denzel Washington, Kate Bosworth and Ryan Gosling.
The events the movie is based on took place in 1971. In the movie, suburban Virginia schools were segregated for generations and when two segregated schools were closed, the students - both of different races - were sent to the same school. The school was under federal mandate to become integrated.
"It's 1971 in Alexandria, Va. and successful high school football coach Bill Yoast [Will Patton] has just been deprived of the head coaching job at the new integrated T.C. Williams High School to make way for equally successful black coach Herman Boone [Denzel Washington]," according to the imdb summary of the movie. "Yoast debates pursuing opportunities elsewhere, but when most of his white players vow to sit out the season unless he coaches, he changes his mind and stays on as Boone's assistant."
This movie is all about learning how to play and work together. The lessons go beyond the boundaries of the team and extend throughout the town.
Best quote: "I don't care if you like each other or not, but you will respect each other."
"Lucas"
The proverbial underdog is a common character in Hollywood. Lucas is just that kind of character. He is socially awkward and picked on for his small size and athletic ineptitude.
Lucas is played by Corey Haim. Other notable actors and actresses in the movie are Kerri Green, Charlie Sheen and Jeremy Piven. Yes, I was hoping to find another actor in the movie whose last name rhymed with "Green" and "Sheen." Would that Jeremy Piven's last name were actually "Piveen!"
Lucas has big dreams about being a football athlete. Fortunately, he befriends the team captain, who supports him in his dreams.
When Lucas gets a chance at football notoriety, we find out if he makes the grade and whether the school community supports him. The movie is about standing up to your bullies, making friends, falling in love, getting your heart broken, succeeding at something and knowing you're going to be OK.
Best quote: "Not everyone has to be glamorous to have someone fall in love with them, you know."
